Interferential Therapy (IFT)
Electrical therapy for pain relief and healing.
Service Description
Interferential (IFC) refers to the interferential current therapy mode on Tone-A-Matic electronic muscle stimulators, which uses two crossing medium-frequency currents to deeply penetrate tissues for effective pain relief (especially chronic pain), reduce swelling, improve circulation, and promote healing, often feeling like a tingling or "beat" sensation without discomfort, unlike basic TENS. It's used by placing electrodes in a crossing pattern over the painful area. HOW IT WORKS: IFC uses two separate circuits with medium-frequency currents (e.g., 4000 Hz) that cross in the treatment area. Where the currents cross, they interfere, creating a lower-frequency "beat" current (e.g., 1-10 Hz or 80-150 Hz) that stimulates nerves and muscles deeper in the tissue. The higher carrier frequency allows the current to bypass the skin's resistance, reaching deeper tissues more comfortably. KEY BENEFITS: PAIN RELIEF: Blocks pain signals (Gate Theory) and encourages endorphin release for chronic, post-surgical, and deep tissue pain (back, shoulder, arthritis). MUSCLE FUNCTION: Can stimulate muscle contraction for strength and recovery. HEALING: Promotes cell membrane permeability, aiding ion flow and circulation. WHAT TO EXPECT: You'll feel a strong tingling or vibrating sensation, often described as a "beat," that feels deep but isn't usually uncomfortable. Electrodes are placed in a crossing pattern (e.g., 4 pads) over the target area. Sessions typically last 20-30 minutes.
